Overview

Wind is silent in free air. Everything you hear is the sound of air interacting with something else: grass stems, fence wire, a building edge, your own ears.

That makes wind the most place-specific sound in nature. The same wind speed sounds completely different over prairie grass, through pines and around rock.

Where it comes from

Turbulent airflow around obstacles, producing broadband noise and, at edges, tonal vortex shedding.

Commonly heard: Open landscapes everywhere; grasslands give the smoothest, most continuous version.

Through the seasons: Dry autumn and winter grass rustles brightly; green summer grass is softer and duller.

Acoustic character

Slowly modulated broadband noise with a shifting spectral tilt as gusts rise and fall.

Frequency profile: Low-mid dominated, with high-frequency rustle added by vegetation. Gusts sweep the balance in both directions.
