Overview
Fresh snow is an excellent acoustic absorber. Its open, porous structure traps sound energy in exactly the mid and high frequencies that carry most environmental detail, which is why a snow-covered landscape feels uncannily quiet.
The effect fades as snow settles and refreezes; an icy crust reflects sound and can actually make an environment brighter than bare ground.
