Overview
Cicadas do not stridulate like crickets. They buckle a ribbed membrane called a tymbal thousands of times a second, and a largely hollow abdomen amplifies the result. It is the most efficient sound-production system in the insect world.
Massed choruses rise and fall in slow waves as groups synchronise and drift apart - an aggregate rhythm no individual is producing.
Where it comes from
Male cicadas calling from tree trunks and branches to attract mates, strongly temperature-dependent.
Commonly heard: Warm temperate and tropical woodland worldwide; in the eastern US, periodical broods emerge on 13- and 17-year cycles.
Through the seasons: Mid to late summer for annual species; periodical broods appear for a few intense weeks.
Acoustic character
Dense, harmonically rich, amplitude-modulated noise with pronounced slow swells.
