Overview
Lake water lacks the swell energy of the sea, so it produces short, quiet, closely spaced impacts rather than long breaking waves. The result is one of the most intimate water sounds there is: you hear individual events rather than a mass.
Because the level is low and the cycle short, it layers under almost anything without competing.
Where it comes from
Locally wind-driven ripples meeting a shoreline of sand, stone or reeds.
Commonly heard: Any inland water body with an open fetch - the larger the lake, the longer the wave period.
Acoustic character
Quiet, closely spaced transients with a short decay. Reed beds add a dry rustle; stones add a bright rattle.
Frequency profile: Mid and upper-mid emphasis with little low-frequency energy - the physical opposite of surf.

- Wave period on a lake is set by fetch - the distance wind travels over open water - so the same wind sounds different on a pond and on a great lake.
