Overview
Spring peepers are chorus frogs barely the size of a thumbnail, yet a full chorus at a breeding pond can be genuinely deafening at close range.
The individual call is a short, sharp, rising peep. Hundreds of overlapping calls produce a shimmering high-frequency mass that pulses as sub-groups fall in and out of phase.
Where it comes from
Breeding calls of male Pseudacris crucifer, produced by pumping air across vocal cords into an inflated throat sac.
Commonly heard: Woodland ponds, marshes and flooded ditches in eastern North America.
Through the seasons: Strictly a spring phenomenon, beginning as soon as ice melts and ending within a few weeks of breeding.
Acoustic character
Very high sound pressure from a large number of small, near-tonal sources; strong chorusing and phase interference.
Frequency profile: Sharp peak in the high mids, typically around 3 kHz - piercing at close range, sweet at distance.
