Overview
Surf has a structure most ambient sound lacks: a slow, quasi-periodic swell cycle, typically somewhere between six and twenty seconds, carrying a broadband noise burst on each break.
That slow cycle is why surf is often described as breath-like. It is close to the pace of relaxed breathing, so people naturally fall into step with it - a pacing effect, not a physiological treatment.
Where it comes from
Wind-generated swell shoaling as it reaches shallow water, breaking, and then draining back across sand or shingle.
Commonly heard: Every open coastline. Sand produces a smoother hiss; shingle beaches add a distinctive rattling drawback.
Acoustic character
Amplitude-modulated broadband noise with a long cycle, plus a lower-frequency rumble from the mass of moving water. Very little tonal content.
