White, Pink and Brown Noise: What the Colours Mean

The three colours, precisely
White noise carries equal power in every hertz-wide slice of the spectrum. Because our hearing groups frequencies into progressively wider bands as pitch rises, white noise sounds bright and hissy, like an untuned radio.
Pink noise carries equal power per octave, meaning power falls by 3 dB per octave as frequency rises. This matches the ear's banding more closely, so it sounds balanced - closer to steady rain or wind in trees. Brown (or red) noise falls faster, at 6 dB per octave, leaving a deep rumble like distant surf or a waterfall.

Masking is the mechanism that clearly works
The reliable benefit of continuous noise is auditory masking: a steady background raises the threshold at which other sounds become noticeable, so a door closing or a car passing no longer stands out against silence. This is basic psychoacoustics and is not disputed.
Masking explains most reported benefits without requiring any special property of the noise itself. It also explains why the effect depends heavily on your environment - noise helps most where there is something to mask.
What the sleep research says
Despite widespread use, the clinical evidence is thinner than expected. Riedy and colleagues published a systematic review in Sleep Medicine Reviews in 2021 examining continuous noise for sleep and found the studies small, heterogeneous and of low quality, with some showing benefit and others none. Their conclusion was that routine recommendation was not justified on current evidence.
Separately, the laboratory work on closed-loop acoustic stimulation used short bursts of pink noise precisely timed to a sleeper's own slow oscillations and did improve slow-wave activity and memory. That is a promising but very different intervention - it requires real-time EEG, not a playlist.
What about focus and concentration?
Findings here are genuinely mixed and appear to depend on the person. Some studies report that moderate background noise helps people with lower baseline attention while hindering those with high attentional capacity - the 'stochastic resonance' hypothesis - but replication is inconsistent.
The practical reading is that noise for focus is worth trying and worth abandoning if it does not obviously help. There is no strong evidence that any particular colour is superior, and preference varies widely.
Choosing sensibly
Pick the colour that you can stop noticing. If white noise feels sharp after ten minutes, move to pink or brown; fatigue is a signal, not a failure of discipline. Volume should be just high enough to blunt intrusions, not to dominate the room.
Continuous playback all night is common, but consider a timer if your goal is only to get to sleep. Some people also find that a completely unchanging sound becomes its own dependency, which is worth being aware of rather than alarmed by.
