Frequency myths vs evidence
A claim-by-claim comparison. Each entry states what is popularly claimed, what the current research shows, how strong that research is, and where to check it yourself.
Sound and music genuinely affect the body and mind, and some of those effects are backed by large randomised trials. Other widely repeated claims have no support at all. Both appear in the same marketing copy, which makes them hard to tell apart. This page separates them without overstating either side.
528 Hz is the 'love frequency' and repairs DNA.
Evidence rating: UnsupportedThere is no peer-reviewed evidence that any audible tone repairs or alters DNA. The claim originates from numerological writing in the 1990s, not from molecular biology. Audible sound carries far too little energy in the wrong form to act on molecular bonds in the way described.
The Solfeggio frequencies are an ancient healing scale.
Evidence rating: Popular claimThe six-tone 'Solfeggio' set was proposed in modern popular literature and derived by numerological reduction. Medieval solmisation used syllables for teaching intervals, not fixed hertz values - fixed pitch standards did not exist at the time.

Tuning music to 432 Hz is proven healthier than 440 Hz.
Evidence rating: Insufficient evidenceTwo small human studies report modest advantages on self-reported measures, and both are limited by sample size and blinding. No systematic review supports a health difference between tuning standards. Preference for 432 Hz is real and legitimate; a demonstrated health benefit is not established.
Binaural beats reliably put your brain into a chosen state.
Evidence rating: Insufficient evidenceBinaural beats are a genuine perceptual phenomenon produced in the auditory brainstem. Meta-analytic estimates find small effects on anxiety, memory and attention with high variability between studies. Reliable, state-specific 'entrainment' as marketed is not established.
Music reduces anxiety before medical procedures.
Evidence rating: Strong clinical evidenceSupported by Cochrane reviews of randomised trials in preoperative and intensive-care populations. Effects on self-reported anxiety are consistent, though modest, and patient-selected music performs best.
Music listening improves sleep quality in adults with insomnia symptoms.
Evidence rating: Moderate evidenceA Cochrane review rated the certainty of this evidence as moderate for self-reported sleep quality. Objectively measured sleep shows weaker and less consistent effects, and music is not a substitute for cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia.
White noise is scientifically proven to improve sleep.
Evidence rating: Insufficient evidenceA systematic review of continuous noise as a sleep aid found the studies small, inconsistent and low in quality, and did not support routine recommendation. Masking of disruptive sounds is a separate, well-established effect.
Listening to Mozart makes children more intelligent.
Evidence rating: UnsupportedThe original 1993 study reported a brief improvement on one spatial task in adults, lasting minutes. Later replications and meta-analyses attribute it to short-term arousal and mood rather than any lasting intelligence gain, and the effect is not specific to Mozart.
Sound timed to brain rhythms can deepen slow-wave sleep.
Evidence rating: Emerging researchLaboratory studies using closed-loop acoustic stimulation - short pink-noise bursts phase-locked to a sleeper's own slow oscillations - enhanced slow-wave activity and overnight memory retention. This requires real-time EEG and is not the same as playing 'delta wave' audio.
Infrasound at 19 Hz causes fear and paranormal experiences.
Evidence rating: Popular claimBased on a small number of informal observations and one concert-hall experiment. The finding has not been replicated under controlled conditions and should be treated as an untested hypothesis.
Loud low frequencies are harmless because bass is not piercing.
Evidence rating: UnsupportedHearing risk depends on total acoustic energy and exposure duration rather than pitch. Sustained loud bass contributes to that dose, and infant sleep machines at close range have been measured exceeding recommended nursery levels.
Music around surgery reduces pain and painkiller use.
Evidence rating: Moderate evidenceA meta-analysis of 73 randomised trials in The Lancet found reductions in postoperative pain, anxiety and analgesic requirements. Effects are modest, and music is studied as an adjunct to analgesia rather than a replacement.
