Overview
A stream makes sound mainly through bubbles. Water tumbling over rocks entrains air; each bubble oscillates briefly at a pitch set by its size, and the sum of millions of these is the shimmering texture you hear.
Because bubble sizes vary continuously, the result is genuinely non-repeating - which is why streams rarely become irritating even over long listening sessions.
Where it comes from
Turbulent flow over an irregular rocky bed, entraining and releasing air bubbles.
Commonly heard: Upland catchments everywhere - steeper gradient and rockier beds make brighter, busier water.
Through the seasons: Loudest during snowmelt and after heavy rain; some headwater streams fall almost silent in late summer.
Acoustic character
Dense, high-rate bubble transients over a continuous flow noise floor. Highly directional: moving a few metres changes the mix completely.
Frequency profile: Mid to high emphasis with a bright top end; larger falls add low-mid weight.
