Wide Stereo Immersion
A study in width. The same simple material is presented so that the stereo image itself becomes the subject, useful for teaching panning and decorrelation.
Material designed around stereo width, depth and the perceived distance of each element.
Width is left-to-right position and the degree to which the two channels differ. Depth is front-to-back distance, produced mainly by the ratio of reverberant to direct sound, by level, and by how much high frequency has been lost. Height is the weakest of the three in ordinary stereo, but early reflections and bright, short delays can suggest elevation convincingly.
Two practical constraints belong in almost every spatial prompt. First, keep low frequencies centred and mono-compatible so the mix survives a fold-down. Second, state the intended playback system: a headphone study and a small-speaker mix ask for different amounts of width. The presets below isolate one axis at a time so the effect of each instruction is audible. Related reading: psychoacoustics.
A study in width. The same simple material is presented so that the stereo image itself becomes the subject, useful for teaching panning and decorrelation.
Designed for close listening on headphones, this piece places each element at a different perceived distance so the front-to-back axis becomes obvious.
A single motif travels from intimate proximity to far distance and back, demonstrating how movement in space can carry a narrative on its own.
An imagined place built from synthesised environmental textures rather than field recordings, layered so that each element occupies its own space and frequency band.
A gentle demonstration of height and surround impression within ordinary stereo, achieved through filtering, early reflections and subtle delay differences.
The opposite of width: everything close, dry and small, so the listener feels placed in the same small room as the instruments.
