Binaural beats: what is supported

Play 200 Hz in one ear and 206 Hz in the other and most listeners hear a 6 Hz pulsing. Neither ear receives that pulsing; it appears where the two signals are compared in the auditory pathway. This is why the effect collapses over loudspeakers, where the tones mix in the air and produce an ordinary acoustic beat instead.

Emerging and mixed: the effects

Human trials have looked at anxiety, attention, memory and mood. Some report small benefits, some report nothing, and the studies differ widely in exposure length, beat frequency, carrier tone, masking noise and blinding. Reviews generally conclude that any effect is small and that better-controlled work is needed. Expectation is a real contributor: people told a sound is relaxing tend to report feeling more relaxed.

Unsupported: the big claims

  • That a specific beat frequency reliably synchronises the whole brain to that rate.
  • That exact-hertz values carry inherent healing properties.
  • That listening replaces treatment for a sleep, mood or pain condition.
  • That effects are guaranteed, uniform, or measurable without instrumentation.

A reasonable way to use them

Treat a binaural track as one more calm, low-event listening option. Keep the level low, stop if it becomes uncomfortable, and do not use them while driving or operating machinery. If you have epilepsy or any condition affected by rhythmic stimulation, check with a clinician first.

Common questions

Are binaural beats real?
The perceptual beat is real and well described. When each ear receives a steady tone a few hertz apart, the auditory system produces a slow pulsing sensation that is not present in either ear alone. Headphones are required.
Do binaural beats change your brainwaves?
Some studies report small shifts in EEG measures, but findings are inconsistent across labs, methods and beat frequencies. The popular idea that a chosen beat reliably drives the brain into a matching state is not supported by the current evidence.
Can binaural beats treat anxiety, insomnia or pain?
No. Some trials report modest self-reported changes in anxiety or relaxation, but the evidence is limited and mixed, and binaural beats are not a medical treatment. Speak to a clinician about a medical concern.
