A perceived rhythmic pulsation at the difference between two pure tones presented separately to each ear - for example 100 Hz left and 102 Hz right produces a 2 Hz delta beat.

Why people use them at bedtime

Falling asleep is largely a process of down-regulation: lowering arousal, slowing breathing, and letting attention stop scanning. Slow, predictable, low-frequency audio gives attention something undemanding to rest on, which is the same reason rain, fans, and pink noise are common sleep companions. Binaural beats add a second idea on top of that: that a slow beat rate may nudge cortical rhythms toward the slow oscillations seen in deep sleep.

The first part - a calmer wind-down - is well grounded in ordinary relaxation research. The second part, entrainment toward sleep stages, is where the evidence gets thinner.

Choosing a beat frequency

  • Delta, 0.5-4 Hz. Associated with slow-wave sleep. The most common choice for tracks intended to play as you drift off.
  • Theta, 4-8 Hz. Associated with drowsiness and the hypnagogic transition. Often preferred by people who find delta tracks too flat to hold attention during a wind-down routine.
  • Alpha, 8-12 Hz. Relaxed wakefulness. Useful earlier in the evening, less so at lights-out.

Carrier tone matters for comfort more than for theory. Low carriers between roughly 100 and 250 Hz are typically felt as warm and easy to sleep through; high carriers can become fatiguing over a long session.

A practical bedtime routine

  1. Put on headphones and set volume low - you should be able to hear your own breathing.
  2. Pick a delta or theta beat with a soft carrier tone.
  3. Layer quiet ambience underneath - rain, distant surf, or brown noise - so the tones do not feel clinical.
  4. Set a 20 to 30 minute timer with a fade-out rather than an overnight loop.
  5. Keep the routine consistent for a couple of weeks before judging whether it helps you.

When to see a clinician instead

Persistent trouble falling or staying asleep for three or more nights a week over several months is chronic insomnia, and the first-line treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), not audio. Loud snoring, gasping, or daytime sleepiness despite adequate time in bed can indicate sleep apnoea and warrants assessment. Audio can support a wind-down routine alongside those treatments; it does not replace them.

Do binaural beats help you sleep?
Some small trials report better subjective sleep quality and faster self-reported sleep onset after listening to low-frequency binaural beats before bed, but samples are small and placebo effects are hard to rule out (Jirakittayakorn & Wongsawat, 2018; Abeln et al., 2014). Treat them as a relaxation aid, not a treatment for insomnia.
What frequency of binaural beats is best for sleep?
Sleep-oriented tracks usually use delta (0.5-4 Hz) beats for deep-sleep association and theta (4-8 Hz) beats for drowsy pre-sleep states. There is no strong evidence that one exact frequency outperforms another; pick the one that feels most settling to you.
How long should you listen before bed?
Most studies used 15 to 30 minutes of listening around bedtime. A timer with a slow fade-out is preferable to looping all night, so the audio does not fragment later sleep stages.
Do you need headphones?
Yes. A true binaural beat requires each ear to receive a different tone, so speakers cannot produce it. Over-ear headphones or a pillow speaker set with separated channels are the practical options.
Is it safe to sleep with binaural beats playing?
For most healthy adults, low-volume listening is low risk. Keep volume well below 60 percent, avoid sleeping in wired earbuds that could tangle, and consult a clinician first if you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder.
